North Carolina’s famous Outer Banks lighthouses were constructed from 1823 through 1875 to guide mariners safely past the treacherous waters known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Among the most notable are the Ocracoke Lighthouse (1823), Cape Lookout Lighthouse (1859), Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (1870), and Bodie Island Lighthouse (1872), each built to help ships navigate one of the most hazardous stretches of coastline on the U.S. Atlantic seaboard.
